February last. The Chinese Syndicate which has leased the property is constructing a vertical wall 1693 feat in length, with a depth of thirty feet of water alongside at L.W.0.S.T., as described at pages 35 and 36 of Mr.Duncan's report, and the Government on its part has undertaken that, when the reclamation is extended east- ward, it will be made a condition that a similar deep water wall will be provided.
It will be seen that Mr.Duncan has designed
a junk basin within the area at North Point which is coloured yellow. It is probable that the construction of this basin will prove to be too expensive for economical working, in which event it is proposed that the reclamation shall extend direct to the outer wall.

D. The Java-Chinazijn, who operate a number of large steamere on the China Coast, have recently approached the Government regarding the pro- vision of wharf accommodation at Hung Hom Bay, and Messrs Butterfield and Swire have made tentative
enquiries as to the extension of their berths at Holt's Wharf. I attach a copy of Mr.Duncan's plan, details of which are given at pages 42 to 46 of his report, The area required by Mesars.Butterfield and Swire is that coloured light pink and cross-hatched darker pink, and the adjoining 1200 feet of wharf accommodation, marked A-A on the plan, would be suitable for the purposes of the Java-China-Japan Lijn.
6. The lease of the latter area would be put up to public auction on conditions to be arranged, but
I recommend that the area required by Messrs Butterfield
and Swire, as an extension to their already existing wharves should be leased to them by private treaty.
